A Forecasting Platform User Profited $436,000 from Wagers Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.

A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

Several of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on recently would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
