Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
