Catherine's Annual Yuletide Service of Carols Spotlights Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The 1,600 guests will hear a mix of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Love and Generosity

The focus of the concert, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a message before the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the charity, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for community pantries.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
