No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
