Oxford Union President-Elect Removed Following Conservative Activist Posts
The future president of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against George Abaraonye reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with results revealed on this week.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The notice confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by George had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The letter criticized the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a political opponent".
The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
