Substantial Online Failure Affects Dozens Sites and Applications

A large-scale web disruption has disrupted numerous sites and applications worldwide, with users reporting issues getting online due to difficulties at the web hosting platform.

The affected platforms include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-managed services including its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted as well as its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of problems accessing the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring device owners used social media to state their home gadgets were failing.

Just within Britain, accounts of issues on specific apps reached the tens of thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the outage originated in the east coast of the United States at AWS, a unit that provides essential online infrastructure for many firms, who rent out capacity on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), the company announced “increased error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The widespread consequence seemed to disrupt platforms worldwide, with the outage tracking website indicating outages with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, also reported a surge in outages on Monday morning, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the issues began.
